Cleaning eases the next cooking session and reduces grease and residue. Cast iron, stainless steel and coated surfaces need different methods, so consult the manual before choosing tools or cleaners. Aggressive scraping does not suit every surface.
After-use cleaning
Follow the recommended shutdown and cooling sequence. Cold water on very hot parts can splash or damage materials. Handle charcoal and ash carefully after visible flames disappear and dispose of them as instructed.
Remove food with a suitable tool, then clean the grease tray and removable parts as directed. Fire alone does not remove every internal deposit. Remaining grease can affect smoke and flare-ups next time.
Inspect tools and surfaces
If using a brush, inspect it and the grate for detached bristles or metal. Suitable alternative tools may be available for the design. Never leave tool fragments on food-contact surfaces.
Check rust, peeling coatings and deformed parts. Do not cook on damaged surfaces before establishing correct repair or replacement. Cast iron may require specific drying and oiling rather than generic soaking or washing.
Before the next cook
Inspect grate and grease collector, then preheat as instructed. Remove cleaning residues by the required rinsing or wiping method. Use food-contact-safe products and do not mix household cleaners.
Prepare clean plates, tongs and thermometer probe. A clean grate does not replace raw/cooked separation and handwashing. Food can still be recontaminated by a plate that held raw meat.
Should the grill be covered immediately?
Wait until cool and dry according to the manufacturer, then use a suitable cover. Trapped moisture or heat under an unsuitable cover may damage it. Good storage starts with drying and inspection.
