Vacuum packaging reduces the air surrounding the product, but it does not turn fresh meat into shelf-stable food. Refrigeration, shelf life, and package instructions are still essential even if the wrapper appears completely airtight.
Read the instructions as they are
Check storage temperature, use-by date and instructions after opening. Do not infer extra shelf life from the packaging or replace product instructions with a general rule. Perishable meat still needs refrigeration at 4°C or below, or suitable freezing according to its instructions.
Color inside the package
The color of meat in a low-oxygen environment may be different from what you see after opening. This is a potential change in appearance, not an independent test of validity. Check the packaging, keeping conditions, smell and texture together, and do not taste the product when in doubt.
When opening
Use clean utensils and avoid spilling raw juices on vegetables or prepared foods. Record the opening date if not cooking everything and follow the stated period after opening. Resealing a bag does not restore the original factory packaging.
What about freezing?
Some suitable packs can be frozen according to their instructions; extra freezer-safe wrapping may be needed. Freezing does not make meat safe if its earlier storage conditions were unsuitable.
When buying a meat box
Check the Kashmiri box or other product description for its actual packaging and contents. A sealed-bag photograph does not confirm a particular packaging method or shelf life. Ask before buying if packaging affects your storage plan, and portion after receipt without keeping every bag out of refrigeration.
